What’s Wrong with Polish Accounting: An Insider’s View
My name is Stas, and I’ve been living and running a business in Poland for 9 years. In this video, and later in this article, we’ll discuss how to properly work with Polish accounting and what business owners in Poland can really expect. When opening a business in Poland, many of us hope that accounting will become our reliable partner — like a business-savvy person with glasses who will help us optimize taxes, warn us about risks, and take care of our financial matters.
Expectations vs Reality: The Path to Recognition
We all want the accountant to call us first and say: “Stanislav, everything is sorted, all taxes are paid, all work permits are obtained.” We hope that they’ll remind us to get a residence card ahead of time and prepare all the documents. However, as experience shows, our expectations are far from reality.
When we call the accounting department in Poland, we often can’t get through, and even if we do, accountants may tell us that our request has been received and we should wait for a response by email. This can take two or three days, and sometimes there is no response at all.
These situations are not uncommon: instead of the expected help, we face confusion and inaction. When we try to ask important questions, such as about obtaining a work permit or choosing the right tax form, we often get the answer that this is not their area of expertise and should be directed to another specialist. This causes dissatisfaction and frustration, as we face problems that require immediate solutions.
Solutions: How to Improve Interaction with Accounting
In this situation, the question arises: is there a solution? Perhaps it’s worth trying to handle accounting independently, although this requires a lot of time and effort. I suggest three main points that can help improve the situation with accounting in Poland.
-
Lower the Expectations: A Realistic Approach
The first point is realizing that a Polish accountant for 150 euros per month will not be able to deeply immerse themselves in your business, take care of it, and optimize taxes. For that price, you won’t receive individual attention or a detailed analysis of your needs. It’s important to understand this from the start to avoid disappointments later on.
-
Find the Right Companies: The Key to Quality
There are companies that offer accounting and consulting services at higher rates, but they provide a higher level of service. These companies are ready to take care of you, providing the necessary reports, helping with payments, and optimizing your business. However, it’s important to note that these companies are not always well-known, and many entrepreneurs are unaware of their existence.
-
Take Responsibility for Your Business: Self-Education
The third point is to take responsibility for your business in Poland. This means self-education and understanding the processes. You don’t need to become an accountant, but you do need to learn how to ask the right questions and understand the context of what’s happening. This will help you effectively interact with accountants and get the information you need.
