The EORI number is used to identify companies involved in import/export and transit activities for all customs processes in the EU member states.
Every importer and exporter trading with non-EU countries must use the EORI code. If you plan to import/export goods into the European Union, you need this number.
This law came into effect on July 1, 2009.
EORI stands for “Economic Operators Registration and Identification.”
It is issued once and is valid for all 27 countries in the zone. The number can be obtained in any EU country; however, in Poland, the registration process takes up to three working days (if all documents are submitted correctly). It is important to understand that the EORI code is issued to the company.
There is one EORI number, but it has different lengths and uses:
- For domestic operations, it consists of the letters “PL,” the NIP number, and a string of up to 17 characters.
- For interactions with third countries, it consists of the letters “PL,” followed by 14 characters and the letter “Z” at the end. Note that the absence of an EORI code excludes the possibility of importing goods from non-EU countries.
Also, instead of the term EORI, you might encounter “The Customs Registration Number,” which is the same.
