What does the REGON number mean?
REGON is an abbreviation for Rejestr Gospodarki Narodowej, the National Business Registry, where all businesses are listed as official entities in the national economy.
The REGON number consists of nine digits under which a company appears in the registry. After registering a company in Poland, the REGON number is used alongside the NIP number and must be included on all company invoices. The first two digits represent the region where the company is registered. The next six digits are the serial number, and the final digit is the control digit.
The inclusion in the REGON registry is necessary for:
- Legal entities
- Individuals running a business
- Organizational units without legal personality
- Branches or subsidiaries of the above organizations (e.g., subsidiaries or branches)
Every business, including sole proprietors, must have a REGON number. When opening a business in Poland, the REGON number is assigned during the company registration process.
How to use the REGON number?
Currently, REGON is not as frequently used as it was a decade ago. Since 2009, its usage has declined. Today, it is mainly used for quick access to complete business information in the database and obtaining patents. It is also required when filling out invoices, documents, contracts, or in other cases where the full details of a company are needed.
